if she was actually an awful person (or even a good person like the snarkily dismissed environmental protestor) this would be more interesting, but she's largely defined by her amorphousness and while that's not inherently a bad strategy and isn't left wholly unexamined, it does mean that the film lacks specificity and falls back on sundance narrative beats (lover's third act terminal illness as catalyst for personal growth alert!!), tired social commentary, overt references to its betters, etc. i don't want to be too hard on this because i'd kill for dialogues as naturalistic, wrinkled and idea-driven as these in a hollywood drama, but i'd also point to something like early desplechin as an example of how much better it could be if it was bolder and less afraid of giving its character an actual perspective, instead of making her some kind of frankly charmless cipher for an unmoored generation and ending with some pseudo-feminist 'independent woman casts off the shackles of relationships/pregnancy and finds herself through her career' type shit. that may not be the most generous interpretation of that epilogue, but he kind of asked for it with all the cringeworthy 'middle-aged man has take on #metoo, mansplaining and cancel culture' tidbits that preceded it.
