Hot Tub Time Machine 2
Hot Tub Time Machine 2 is the perfect example of how to stretch a joke well past its breaking point. If the first film was a cheeky, goofy romp with a certain charm, this sequel feels like it was made out of obligation-like someone just hit the "repeat" button without thinking it through. This time, the gang travels to the future instead of the past, and with that shift, most of the original's appeal is lost. And worst of all, John Cusack is nowhere to be found.
Adam Scott steps in as Cusack's supposed son, but the script doesn't give him much to work with. The situations are more absurd than funny, and most of the jokes fall flat-lewd without the cleverness. There are a few scattered moments that might get a chuckle, but overall, it feels like you're watching a watered-down, soulless version of what came before.
What's really missing is that mix of nostalgia and madness that made the original work. Here, everything boils down to forced gags and aimless scenes. The humor lacks bite, and the plot just meanders with no clear direction. There's no mystery, no thrill, and what little sci-fi is left feels like an afterthought.
In the end, what could've been a fun second dip into a ridiculous idea ends up as a weak comedy that doesn't even try to pretend it has something new to offer. If you really loved the first one, maybe there's something to salvage here... but otherwise, it's best not to climb into this tub.
