The White Lotus - Season 2
It’s very good. It is another White Lotus, yes, but it changes enough not to feel like a simple repeat. This time Italy gives everything an even more seductive air: the hotel, the sea, the interiors, the light, the photography… visually it’s gorgeous, and the series knows exactly how to use that luxury setting to talk again about desire, power, money, sex, and moral decay.
Once again, one of its biggest strengths is the cast. The ensemble is very strong, and the characters are built with more layers than they seem to have at first. The show once again does that thing it does so well: it gives you people who are more or less awful and still makes them impossible to stop watching. Not because they are likable, but because they are written with a lot of malice and a lot of truth.
If the first season had a more direct nervous energy, this one feels slower, more sensual, and more poisonous. There is less immediate explosion and more buried tension, more games of appearances, more emotional and sexual manipulation. That may be why some people find it less sharp, but it works for me because it builds a very steady discomfort.
I also think this second season broadens its focus well. It doesn’t stay only with class satire or luxury tourism, but digs much more deeply into relationships, masculinity, desire, and the fantasies people project onto others and onto themselves. That is where Mike White once again shows that he knows how to observe his characters with cruelty, but also with intelligence.
It’s true that it takes a little longer to get going and that it doesn’t always have the same surprise impact as the first, simply because now you already know the mechanism. But once it settles in, it holds its tone very well and finds its own personality. It’s not trying to copy Hawaii in Sicily, but to create another variation with a different rhythm, a different temperature, and a different kind of poison.
Overall, I think it’s a very solid second season, beautifully acted and visually stunning. It may not have surprised me as much as the first one purely because of novelty, but it feels just as enjoyable and, in some respects, even more refined.
