Well... I liked this at first because it looks amazing for 1947 and has some great acting. The issue is that this has not aged well at all. I'm going to spoil the whole movie and talk about some pretty distressing stuff.

Our main character is an incel who blames his abusive father and his "hunchback" for the reason he can't get laid. He straight-up attempts to rape a woman against a ladder and is only stopped when another woman comes by and intervenes. Now, that's awful enough, but in their very next scene, she's singing as if nothing happened, saying that he "has his own problems." He asks her to pretend it never happened, and then they go on a boat ride and get romantic at a nearby lighthouse. I know this is an old-fashioned foreign film, but I have never seen a bigger yikes from a movie...

Also, they have that whole hysteric woman trope which really should have died out in the 1930s or should not have existed at all. To be honest, doomed romance is something I usually enjoy, but this one just felt like it was in bad taste. The only reason this is getting a 2/10 instead of a 1/10 is because I liked the acting and visuals. Other than that, this is one of Ingmar Bergman's lesser works, and that's okay!

Oh yeah, and he called me a slut at the end of the movie! What's up with that? ("Slut" means ending in Swedish!)

By the way, I decided July will be Ingmar Bergman Month. I watched three of his other films in June, so I'm cheating a little on my challenge, but I think that's fine. Don't let this movie dissuade you---he has made a lot of other amazing films!
Mini Review: Well... looked amazing for 1947 with great acting, but it hasn't aged well. Distressing spoilers. Main character is an incel blaming abusive father and his "hunchback" for not getting laid. Attempts rape, stopped by another woman. Next scene she sings like nothing happened and they become romantic—very jarring.
