Carandiru
Oh wow, this film was quite the surprise! I was not expecting to like this because I usually hate films based on true events, and I was not really feeling this at the start. But once it got to the characters of Ebony and Majesty, I realized that this was going to be a character study along the lines of Sing Sing. Although this is not as good as Sing Sing and is a tad too long, I enjoyed this as a darker look at friendships in prison. I really enjoyed how complicated the dynamics were in this and how there was so much depth to everyone. I don't think I disliked any of the named characters besides "Beard," who I felt added nothing. This was an extremely dark movie, but I was enraptured the entire time!
