Cries and Whispers
8/25/2025:
My 8th Ingmar Bergman film and it's better then almost every other movie of his which is not saying much. I liked the use of the color red and this and the acting was really good. I didn't feel this one that much. Oklar Lackluster

This is the second time I have seen this, and I think it's a lot less effective than I first remembered. I only like a couple of Ingmar Bergman movies, and this would still be on the higher end. I love the use of the color red throughout the film, and the overall atmosphere is incredibly bleak. Harriet Andersson is amazing here and should have been in more of Bergman's movies. There's also one particularly unsettling character who does some genuinely creepy things, and those moments were easily some of the film's highlights.
There's a lot more negatives for me, though. At this point, I've realized that I just don't really like Liv Ullmann as an actress. I feel like she has very little range, and every performance I've seen from her feels similar. In this movie, I thought every other actress gave a stronger performance. I also found this much more boring the second time around. The bleak atmosphere can only carry it so far, and many scenes linger well past the point they need to, which really hurt the pacing for me. It's still a visually striking film with some great performances, but overall it's quite the mixed bag.
