Don't Be Afraid of the Dark
Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce can do no wrong, but this was a bit boring, all things considered. There's a lot of great horror in this, but it's few and far between. A lot of this movie relies on some suspension of disbelief. For example, the creatures in this cannot stand bright lights, and yet some characters just don't know how to flick a light switch or go get people once there's evidence. I know the main character is a child and is scared, but I feel like there's some basic logic that could have been followed. Also, I am pretty sure one of the creatures walks in broad daylight too.
I still enjoyed this, and you can tell that Guillermo del Toro produced this with how it's shot. It's also written by Guillermo del Toro, and I think all of the issues in this were from it being directed by a first-timer who probably bit off more than he could chew. There really is something here, and I love the mythology and the art design in this movie. I just wish there was a little bit more of Guillermo del Toro's touch besides his backing and his writing.

Mini Review: Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce can do no wrong, but this was a bit boring, all things considered. There’s some great horror here, but it’s few and far between. The movie relies on a lot of suspension of disbelief, especially with characters ignoring the creatures' weakness to bright lights. I still enjoyed it, and you can tell Guillermo del Toro’s influence through the visuals, mythology, and art design. I just wish there was more of his touch beyond his writing and producing.
