I’ll admit, I’ve only seen a single episode of DBZ when I was 7, and I thought it was one of the worst things I’d ever seen. I don’t give a shit about this IP, so I’ll just say: this pile of garbage wasn’t as bad as I expected, and honestly, it’s the best thing from Dragon Ball I’ve experienced since the video game Jump Force! That said, full respect to Akira Toriyama, who helped make anime popular and is still a great artist. It’s just too bad he basically made the fast food of anime—but hey, you need basic stories before great ones can come along.

This movie doesn’t have a great story, and I don’t care about accuracy. What it does have is hilarious moments. I literally laughed for two straight minutes the first time I saw Goku! The rest of the movie is a mix of that laughter and sheer boredom—but at least it respects my time, unlike the anime, which would have been four hours long with half the runtime spent just talking. Also, thank god this movie avoids the painfully childish writing of the anime.

So yeah: funny, boring, but not offensively awful like I was led to believe. And at least it’s not plain dull. A proper remake of this could actually be really cool. I don’t get why people call this the worst thing ever—there are plenty of other live-action anime adaptations that are much worse. I suppose it’s probably bad if you care about the anime, but if you don’t, this isn’t nearly as bad as people make it out to be.
Mini Review: I’ll admit, I only saw one DBZ episode at 7 and thought it was awful. I don’t care about this IP, but this movie wasn’t as bad as I expected—actually the best Dragon Ball thing I’ve experienced since Jump Force. Respect to Akira Toriyama for popularizing anime, though his work feels like fast food storytelling. The movie’s story is weak, but it has hilarious moments—I laughed nonstop at Goku’s first scene. Overall: funny, boring, but not the disaster people claim.
