Ghostwatch
This was on my watchlist for a long time, and I'm rather disappointed. Ghostwatch was hyped up as one of the craziest "live broadcasts" to freak people out into thinking it was real. The comparisons make it seem like this was along the lines of War of the Worlds, but this is just so absurdly fake that I don't even know where to start. In fact, I have such an issue with this movie that I don't even know if I can fairly talk about it.
I think a big part of the problem is that the entire experience hinges on buying into the illusion, and I simply couldn't do that. The acting, presentation, and overall setup never convinced me that I was watching anything other than a scripted production. Maybe this was a lot more effective for audiences who watched it when it originally aired, but knowing its reputation and going in with expectations of something genuinely shocking, I was left wondering what all the fuss was about. I can appreciate the idea behind presenting a horror story as a live television broadcast, but the execution just didn't work for me.
Chalk it up to an overhyped movie that's just very mid. I can understand why the concept might have been effective in its original context, but that doesn't mean the experience holds up nearly as well decades later. Unfortunately, I found Ghostwatch far more ridiculous than frightening, and I walked away disappointed rather than disturbed.
