What an absolutely amazing and heartbreaking character study about a man in the final moments of his life. This is one of those films that immediately became personal to me because I had a step-father who died to cancer. A lot of this film spoke to me in how short life really is and how it's important to value life and be kind. This movie even being &1/2 hours long went by in a breeze & I never felt bored. I will say though that one segment of this movie could have been shortened a few minutes!

Happy birthday Akira Kurosawa!!!
I watched this only seven months ago so all of this is pretty fresh for me. It's strange but I might as well just copy my first review at the end here as none of my thoughts changed. This is such a heartbreaking movie that I doubt I could ever watch it again, but it's one of the best movies of all time. I love character studies as well, but this movie makes me so despondent. I can't help but tear up every time I see the poster of Takashi Shimura on the swing set.

Made me yawn a lot. He mopes the whole time! Changing your life by doing things anyone and many do (gambling, clubs, drinks, dancing, voyeurism) is cheap storytelling, so nothin...
