Pretty Baby
This has to be one of the most controversial movies I have ever watched right up there with Cannibal Holocaust and A Serbian Film. While those were disgusting fictional films that had everyone consenting to the exploitations, this one did not.
Brooke Shields has always had a troubled history of being exploited her whole life and it's truly despicable. I wish I could say that this movie was appropriate for the art or that it was okay for the times, but this is not that. The whole movie made me uncomfortable and stressed me out. Maybe that was the point. Maybe it was also about obsession and just how creepy society was in the 1910s.
But then on the other hand, this movie is shot really well and has some fantastic acting. Brooke Shields, Keith Carradine, and Susan Sarandon all do a really good job acting across from each other and is probably the only reason to watch this movie at all. The plot in general is nothing special and as I said before, it's mostly just how shockingly plain everything is that's novel.
It really is a shame because there's a beautiful movie in here somewhere but I felt that Brooke Shields had no idea what she was doing and could not consent to any of the scenes in this film. As far as art goes, this could have been just as great without any of the nudity. It not only distracts from the film but makes it disgusting and filthy when I don't think that's what the film was going for.
I was debating to make a point and not giving it a score of just giving it a 5/10. I decided on giving this a 5/10 because I feel that score reflects how I feel about it. This is really good in some aspects and abhorrent in others. I would not recommend this movie unless you are interested in this side of the film industry or in Louis Malle's filmography
