Sunset Boulevard
Good gracious, this was a bad film, and then it kept going and somehow got worse.
This is not like Double Indemnity, where I still feel like I owe that film another chance. This one genuinely hurts because I thought Billy Wilder was incapable of making a bad movie.
Where do I even begin? I hated the characters, the acting, the dialogue, pretty much everything. I just do not understand it. Why was it made like this? It feels like a half-hearted noir that never commits to the bit. And what is this bizarre way of speaking that oozes relaxed desperation? Where were the redrafts for this script? Oh, the irony, where are the redrafts?!!
The main guy should have gotten his head on straight and played his cards more carefully after seeing how that madwoman handled a game of bridge. As for the "crazy lady," she should have been entertaining, but the acting was so droll that it is almost absurd anyone in the movie found her captivating. Was that the point, to give an uncanny impression of an actress past her prime? If that was the direction Gloria Swanson was given, then she did the job, although I still feel it could have been handled much much better.
Whew. So much for a "mini review," like I usually do. This film really hurt me. I feel betrayed, and I wish I could have liked it more. The only reason I am not giving it a 1 out of 10 is because at least it was shot nicely, and the butler was great. I am just glad Billy Wilder made better movies. I think I might need to give Double Indemnity another chance for sure now!

Mini Review: Good gracious, this was a bad film, and it somehow got worse as it went on. It hurts because I thought Billy Wilder could not make a bad movie. I hated the characters, acting, and dialogue. It feels like a half-hearted noir that never commits. The strange, overly desperate way everyone talks is baffling.
