Supergirl
Supergirl is a boring, confused mess of a superhero movie that feels like it was assembled without any real understanding of what makes a story land. It is another modern superhero failure full of contrived plot points, inconsistent character writing, and tonal whiplash that never settles into anything coherent. The whole thing plays out like an "and then" script where events just happen because the movie needs them to happen, not because they grow naturally from character decisions or meaningful setup. It's slop.
The opening already sets the tone wrong with Krypto pissing on a photo of Superman, which feels less like edgy humor and more like the movie proudly announcing that it's "cool and different". From there it never really recovers. Supergirl herself is written like a collection of disconnected ideas rather than a real character. In Superman, she leaves Krypto behind so she can go get drunk. In this movie, she drags him through the galaxy like an emotional support puppy prop. That inconsistency is the only reason one of the major plotlines even happens.
The moral writing is downright baffling. The movie keeps trying to push ideas like "killing changes you" and "revenge will corrupt you," but it never earns those themes. They feel like inspirational quotes stapled onto a screenplay that forgot to build toward them. Someone even tells Supergirl not to pursue revenge even though everyone responsible for her tragic backstory is already dead. Revenge against WHO!?
Then there's the villain. The movie treats him like he's basically a galactic mix of Hitler, Stalin, and Epstein. He's kidnapping young girls to become his brides on a massive scale, yet somehow nobody in the movie acts like stopping him is the most important thing in the universe. The heroes casually bounce from side quest to side quest while this guy is apparently committing atrocities across the galaxy. At one point it genuinely feels like the characters are more concerned with saving one dog than preventing millions, maybe billions, of women from becoming sex slaves. The movie completely loses its moral compass.
The ending somehow gets even dumber. After spending the entire movie preaching that killing this monster will corrupt Supergirl's soul forever, she kills him anyway and says, "This is for my dog." Your DOG? That's the emotional payoff? Not the countless victims. Not the enslaved girls. The dog. Then someone suggests letting him live would have been her revenge. What the fuck is this movie? If anything, saying nothing at all would have been far more powerful than trying to squeeze one last shallow moral lesson into a scene that completely failed to earn it.
The world building falls apart the second you think about it. A civilization can build a planet-wide shield capable of protecting an entire world but can't build spaceships beyond a tiny escape pod? Supergirl gets the only pod... and they make sure the dog comes too. No other children. No babies. No evacuation plan. Just one girl and her dog. It feels morally bankrupt. Kryptonite darts show up later when the "plot" needs them, then stop working when the movie needs Supergirl alive. Nothing has consistent rules.
Lobo is another huge disappointment. He shows up, acts like a watered down version of himself, spends half his screentime complimenting the cast while casually murdering people, and then disappears before he gets to do anything interesting. What a waste. Even the soundtrack feels confused. The cover of "The Middle" during one of the action scenes doesn't fit the tone whatsoever and just left me wondering who thought that was a good idea.
There are pieces of a better movie buried somewhere in here. Milly Alcock does a decent job with what she's given, and I liked seeing Lobo even if the movie completely wasted him. Unfortunately, those bright spots are buried under lazy writing, broken themes, inconsistent world building, juvenile humor, and a script that constantly mistakes saying something for actually earning it.
This movie wants to be emotional, profound, funny, epic, and the start of a promising new DC universe. Instead, it's just another confused modern superhero movie that mistakes noise, speeches, and random nonsense for storytelling.

Mini Review: Supergirl is another boring, confused modern superhero mess. It's an "and then" movie full of contrived writing, inconsistent characters, broken themes, and world building that falls apart the second you think about it. The film constantly preaches morality it never earns, wastes Lobo, fumbles its villain, and somehow ends with "This is for my dog."
