The Bad Sleep Well
This was a very pleasant surprise of a film! You can only tell so much from a plot synopsis and the first 20 minutes of this did not really interest me a whole lot. However, I quickly fell in love with the revenge plot in this and it just kept getting better and better! I have said quite a few times how much I love tragedies and revenge stories and this is getting full marks! There's an endless supply of complicated dynamics and complex characters and this balances it all in a palatable way!
The way this is shot is also expertly done. I can't beleive that this released in 1960 because the level of craft in this feels as if it could have come out way more recently. I have not talked about him enough but Toshirō Mifune is a legendary actor and he did a great job with a more reserved and scheming type of character in this. I almost didn't recognize him with glasses. In fact, there were so many great performances in this, but I have to signal out Toshirō Mifune because this is the last film of his that I will be watching this month.
If you are getting into Akira Kurosawa films, I highly recommend this one and would say it should be near the top of your list! I am beyond excited for my final Akira Kurosawa film tomorrow!
