Okay, one last movie I think I won't like! I promise the next couple movies will be more positive reviews!
This is my third Béla Tarr movie and I think he's just not for me at all. Werckmeister Harmonies was his best movie but even then, I didn't like it that much. I enjoy the visual style and how the movie looks but that's about it. Everything else is just a boring mess that does not make me contemplate anything.
On Letterboxd, Edwin said it best by saying "An Elephant Sitting Still, despite its length and heaviness, never dragged because I cared so deeply about the people on screen." I think the biggest issue with Béla Tarr is that the characters he makes are so disinteresting and nothing can really save his movies. I feel like a prisoner watching and I look longingly at anything else. It's sad that he has a great visual style but his movie is so boring, I still would rather look at my fingernails with more interest.
