The Umbrellas of Cherbourg
I was really looking forward to this because I love my French movies, and I enjoyed the first song choice in this. Then... Oh shit, the whole movie is a musical! I hate musicals, and I think Jacques Demy might be the one French director not for me.
I enjoyed this a lot more than The Young Girls of Rochefort, though, and I really appreciate the set design, but that's pretty much it. I'm not too sure why I hate musicals, but I think it's just that I want people to speak normally and realistically. Maybe they're supposed to evoke fairy tales and be that way, but I just don't like it, and I'm sorry!
I'm only watching this because it's in the Letterboxd Top 500. I won't go after any of the other musicals after this, I promise!
