Although the first 20 minutes of this film were a bit slower paced for my taste, there was just so much atmosphere and amazing shots that I had no choice but to get sucked in! Also, the guy obsessed with becoming a samurai was funny. The two stories of obsession are honestly enchanting and fascinating! The ending between them was filled with loss and grief and I am honestly at a loss of words! This truly was an interesting film to watch!

This is still astoundingly cinematic for 1953. I honestly thought I was watching a film from the 1970s! The story is pretty simple and I only really care about the wannabe samurais story until the ending. I also liked this a lot more then the other Kenji Mizoguchi film I saw called Sansho the Bailiff.
This is unfortunately a little slow for me considering it's runtime. I still really enjoy it though. I will have to check out more from Kenji Mizoguchi.
