V/H/S/Mixtape
Alright, so I was quite worried about this one from the reviews here on Letterboxd, but V/H/S Mixtape actually came through and is one of the more consistent anthologies in the V/H/S series. I would say that it gets better as it goes along and has two of my favorite segments. There's a 20-minute-long one that's exactly in the middle and is dripping with Lovecraftian horror, and the last segment is so creative and interesting.
The main issue with this one is that the first half hour of the movie is just gross-out shock humor and doesn't really fit with the rest of the movie. The bridge segments are also just random and don't really lend themselves to the feel of this movie. All of the segments have to do with music, but the bridge segments have these weird, gross demons that don't really have anything to do with music. It's a strange beast.
I would go into more detail on all of these, but I think I might wait for the 10th V/H/S movie and do a super review of all of them. In general, I like this series, and I would put this one on the higher end just because of the two segments I mentioned. Oh yeah, and this is totally better than the "video game" Mixtape!

Mini Review: I was worried by the reviews, but V/H/S Mixtape is one of the series' more consistent entries. It gets better as it goes, with two standout segments: one dripping with Lovecraftian horror and a creative finale. The first half hour's gross-out humor feels out of place, and the weird demon interludes barely connect to the music theme. It's a strange beast, but I'd rank it higher in the series. This is still way better than the video game Mixtape!
