I really wish what all the fuss about this is. The performances are amazing (with the exception of the lead lady), and I like the conversation about Jesus at the end, but nothing about this is unique or ever that special for being filmed in the 60s. Honestly, I was going to give this a 5 or a 6, but having the first 13 minutes be a waste of time just makes me upset.

This is my second time watching this, and I still don't really get this movie. I don't think I've ever seen a more boring film under 90 minutes. What's worse is that you could cut out the first 13 minutes and not only would nothing be lost, the movie might actually be better for it. I understand the themes and ideas it's exploring, but, like much of Bergman's work, I've seen other films handle a crisis of faith far more effectively. Movies like The Passion of Joan of Arc and, ironically, The Seventh Seal come to mind. More modern examples such as First Reformed and Silence accomplish what this film seems to be striving for.

I got nothing out of the romance subplot, and it only serves to take up even more time in an already aimless narrative. The acting is solid enough, and it's certainly a beautiful-looking movie, but I have nothing to latch onto emotionally or intellectually. That guy at the end does make a compelling point about God's silence. It's just a shame that it's buried in a movie I found so unengaging
