Love Streams

N2/G3/M2/C2.5/X2.5 RI -1 A film that spends most of its runtime struggling to explain its existence. Artificial characters are pushed through increasingly contrived situations to reiterate the same simple traits until there is no point left to miss. The late surrealism finally gives it some identity and even a few genuinely great scenes, but it arrives almost independently of the preceding mundanity. Otherwise, it often feels like the least interesting conventions of the 80s era distilled into a film of their own.
