An interesting speculation, though I suspect a full scholarly documentary approach might have worked better, especially given that Emmerich seems to struggle with juggling the various historical periods with either accuracy or coherency. I pride myself on a working knowledge of Shakespeare’s life and times, but found the convolutions of the relationship(s) between Oxford and Elizabeth difficult to follow, until they click in a series of revelations worthy of Qanon (or maybe THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL!) Still, it’s entertaining, and crafted with some taste and reserve by Emmerich, who gets fine performances from Thewlis, Ifans and a wonderful Redgrave; amusing casting of Jacobi in the prologue may be a nod to Branagh’s HENRY V?
