Black Christmas
Someone’s been watching GET OUT…. While it’s an interesting idea to re-frame the concept of a stereotypical slasher into an analogy for the #BelieveWomen/#MeToo era, this front-loads all of its ideas as literal, abrasive exposition and forgets to be scary or even vaguely unsettling, not helped by a tendency to crib from better movies (I spotted checks to PSYCHO and EXORCIST III as the most egregious). The cast do what they can with the clunky material handed to them, and what is most interesting is the second-act-ish turn which almost heads into a #MeToo critique, but it’s all undone by the unforgivably clunky dialogue. Always nice to have Elwes around, as hero or villain as the film requires!
