With this cast and concept, it should have been an easy home run, especially in the arena of schlock horror, but there is an at times maddening inconsistency in tone and intent which makes it difficult to engage with – it’s not sharp edged enough to be dipping its toes into satire, and while it has a few amusing moments of comedy (Ortega has a great pratfall in the opening scene), it’s not really played for laughs, and once the unicorns take a turn into splatter horror, it’s not really that scary, despite a surprisingly high volume of gore. There’s also a strange disconnect in some of the performances, with Leoni going abrasively over-the-top and Ortega seeming unusually ill-at-ease as the “straight man”. Highlighted by Poulter well and truly in his element as a skeevy “tech-bro”, and an underutilised Grant as slimy head of the family. Certainly not unwatchable, but a considerable disappointment given the talent involved.
