Low-key but effective kitchen sink drama can’t help but be a little softly-softly to accommodate its TV audience, but a terrific cast work overtime to elevate it to a higher plain – most effective in depicting Loftus and O’Connell’s gradually developing relationship, which never moves in quite the direction you expect; this is down to the fine writing from Savage & Stephens, but also in Loftus and (particularly) O’Connell’s performances, who make these characters distinctive and real. Good support work from Bremner and Marsan elevating their more thinly written archetypes.
