A beautiful, warm-hearted portrait of the mild to slightly daffy eccentrics populating the end of the world is a loving and sometimes bemused view of the mini-society that grows and is fostered in the hermetic community. Artfully mixes human portraits with some stunning under-ice footage that rivals anything in an Attenborough production, sprinkled with some typical philosophical musings from a tired-sounding Herzog, which gives the film a feeling of a final eulogy (thankfully 17 years later, he’s still going strong!) Above all else, one of Herzog’s most accessible and flat-out enjoyable works
