Felon

While this has some interesting things to say about corruption in the prison and judicial system, personified in Perrineau’s chilling ring-leader, there’s far too much questionable morality in the other characters’ decisions that the movie seems you to want to buy in to uncritically, especially the set-up to Dorff’s incarceration which plays with a far too melodramatic heavy-hand (like it or not, he pursued and killed a person who was no longer an active threat). A shame, because the shades of grey the movie approaches other aspects of the story might have been useful here in bumping my score a few points. Kilmer strolls into the film about mid-way through and essentially steals it, with a beautifully judged and realised portrait of a career criminal, which touches on just the notes of subtlety and ambiguity that the movie as a whole fails at.
