Funny how the fact that this is a literal remake of A STAR IS BORN is kept quiet in most of the discourse surrounding it, meaning there is an unbroken line of STARs from the Greatest Generation through to Millennials; I’m just sorry Gen-X has to be saddled with this one... For this material to work, you either need to believe in the relationship or the power of the music and/or performer (and in the Garland & Gaga universes, you get both) – it’s sort of fascinating how Carey, an already well-established and accomplished star circa 2001 is so terribly unconvincing here in both her acting and singing performances, though the lack of chemistry between her and Beesley doesn’t help matters, and her musical material is the most pitchy and warmed-over middle of the road 90s pop that the sight of the true believers with their lighters out in the climactic concert inspires derisive laughter. Overall though, I wouldn’t say this is a “bad” movie as much as it is a colossally dull and boring one – if you’re looking for campy absurdity, I’d suggest shopping elsewhere!
