God's Not Dead
Stating up-front, I give significant leeway to the principal of the portrayal of the antagonists here as foaming at the mouth lunatics, given I’ve seen my share of crazy religious kooks in other media (goose meet gander etc.), but to give Kirk Cameron some credit, at least his brand of revivalism takes a certain joy and pleasure in the faith, misguided as it may be. What’s sad about this film is what an abrasively unpleasant and hostile vision of the world it presents, for both the believers and non-believers, which makes it brainless slop that’s extraordinarily difficult to get through and find even derisively amusing. Rare is the movie where I want to punch both protagonist (Harper) and antagonist (Sorbo) in the face, but here we are – their supposed intellectual duels find both men almost laughable light-weights.
