Trés droll comedy starts very well, especially as Coogan’s dead-pan egotist blunders his way through the petty politics of school drama programs – the film sometimes seems to have trouble reconciling whether it is a spoof or a more “realistic” comedy; the high school drama critic for instance doesn’t play as credible, but might have worked if we were to believe he was a figment of Coogan’s imagination, and the film is full of ideas that are funny in isolation, but don’t really lock together in a convincing way. However, I had a smile plastered to my face for the whole running time, so it’s difficult to complain too loudly – might “Rock me sexy Jesus” be the best musical theatre anthem this side of “ELEPHANT!”?
