Lurid and ugly portrait of a descent to hell evokes memories of stylistically “arty” films of the past – there are echoes of DON’T LOOK NOW and EYES WIDE SHUT in this tale of Strang’s navigation of an ethereal underworld in search of answers and catharsis for his personal crisis, and that description makes the film sound more interesting than it actually is! The biggest problem is a dire lack of motivation and momentum for our protagonist once he locks in to his exploration of the seedy underbelly – as presented, he is such a cipher that there’s no real opportunity for the film to gain resonance or interest; at a certain point, it becomes ugliness for the sake of ugliness, and not especially enjoyable or insightful. At least it’s visually appealing, especially if you have a soft spot for a funky 80s aesthetic.
