My Friend Dahmer

Might have been an interesting coming-of-ager if we didn’t know going in where the story was headed – reminds me of the recent NITRAM in its efforts to try and explain the inexplicable: how some fairly typical teenage japing turned to a mini-cult around Dahmer who then decided butchering people was the way to go? Developing and centralising one of Dahmer’s friends (eg. the excellent Wolff) might have been a better strategy, because bringing the fairly bland and cipher-like Dahmer to the forefront gives the film a hollow core which makes most of the first two acts borderline tedious at times. Generally well-performed (Heche’s unbalanced mother is a stand-out).
