Prom Night
Some promising ingredients and a decent set-up makes this slasher for teens at least start on a good note – the writing is on the wall fairly quickly when the “it was all a dream” trope begins to be employed too regularly, and it may be a semi-spoiler to say that Cardone’s screenplay shoots itself in the foot by effectively removing any suspense about the outcome, and the killers’ identity, even before the curtain goes up! A bit of a shame, because purely on its technical merits, this could have been a superior genre entry – McCormick knows how to stage a jump-scare scene, and his cast are a likable if sometimes hilariously over-qualified (Elba) bunch; a lack of gruesome violence or overt unpleasantness makes it a fairly easy watch.
