Pleasant but uninspired coming-of-ager has the slightly pretentious “aughts indie” watermark all over it – not for the first time, I fear re-watching the movies of a similar ilk that I loved at the time and finding their good qualities slipped away to time! This is still fine, and not terribly obnoxious, but still does a decent push towards incel culture, which makes Roberts’ lead, while well realised, a little difficult to take at times (at least the soundtrack veers away from too much hipster pretensions). Hawkins and Taylor are as always compelling characters, and a few incidents work quite well (especially the bittersweet Christmas dinner).
