Mixing elements of THE FUGITIVE and FRANTIC (and some of the knotty and seedy plotting of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO), this is an enjoyable and efficient old-school thriller that gets away with just enough tricky plot convolutions to keep you on your feet, without quite moving into bemused absurdity; helped by a rock-solid performance by Cluzet as the appropriately bewildered Hitchcockian hero and a well-chosen support cast who all inhabit their roles to an off-kilter degree, all the better to serve as some delicious red herrings! Becomes a little too much of a good thing towards the finale, with Canet’s direction and screenplay both losing control of the broad tapestry of characters and resorting to an overly arbitrary and expositional finale, but still an overall terrific adult thriller.
