The End of the Affair
Yes it’s a dark, dank and somewhat miserable romantic drama, but so ideally cast (could anyone but Fiennes so piteously play a man capable of cuck-holding himself?), and shot through with Jordan’s biting wit as a film-maker, that it works even sometimes in spite of itself, with its RASHOMON style of repeating key scenes from various points of view building a gloriously corrosive tension which never quite snaps or evaporates. Moore manages to be both radiant and chillingly brittle as required, and Rea utilises his hang-dog aura to imbue life into Fiennes’ mirror as a man who almost begs to be betrayed. Certainly not a cheery experience, but a richly atmospheric one, and quite engrossing in its way.
