Since we’re not in the 80s, I can’t even say “Cocaine is a hell of a drug”, but it would have gone some way to unpacking how on earth this mad, loopy though oft times dull and tedious creation came into being. There’s a part of me that has a quiet affection for the sensibilities here; this is not a lazy and thoughtless cash-grab in its construction, but a bizarre collision of peak Star Wars with the broadest of campy variety shows, contrasting Ford, Hamill and Fisher’s uneasy disconnect with the likes of Korman, Arthur and Carney showing a peculiar mix of enthusiasm and bemusement as to the material they need to navigate, though Korman’s Julia Child impression is a genuinely inspired bit of madness. And those musical numbers…… the whole production is a failure, but I’m kind of glad it exists as a pop culture artefact.
