What appears to be silly fluff on the surface is actually pretty fluffy underneath as well – this feels like a gentle spoof of a Miss Marple mystery courtesy of Hitchcock, which eschews a detective figure in favour of an at times hilariously demented cast of characters, scheming in a cozy and indirect way about the titular problem (my favourite is the unlikely dance of seduction between Gwenn and Natwick, with Gwenn’s crafty bumbler a beautiful curtain-raiser). Really just an excuse for some Hitchcock cackling, but so beautifully crafted (and especially stunningly shot – the 4K disc is worth picking up for the rendering of the cinematography alone), that it elevates itself to almost competition with Hitch’s top tier.
