I’m going to put aside any objections I might have to both the subject matter and how it is handled; it’s a full buy-in on faith-based naivete in its approach to the central characters and their relationships, and while it saddens me to think some may view anything in Kendrick’s screenplay as gospel truth… well I’ve chosen to play in Miss Clara’s backyard, haven’t I! Kendrick remains one of the more serviceable Christian film-makers, and it’s difficult to deny he guides this with a smooth and steady hand, drawing reasonable performances from his cast, even if Abercrombie’s aforementioned Miss Clara becomes a bit much; if you have to take a faith-based route, you could do a lot worse.
