The Invitation
The second time watching this was equally as enjoyable as the first as I noticed all the same things so I wouldn't watch this film again but it is still very good. The negatives are the way some shots are done. This really confuses me as this is a film hat clearly doesn't rely on spoon-feeding the audience yet loads of shots would focus far too much on something that should be more of a subliminal projection. The film is set out as if it is a play. This was most likely done due to the smaller budget yet I have to say that as well as isolating the viewer as long as the main character it does, however, make some of the repeated tension very... Repeated. The final payoff is great as they use the 1960 era idea of showing a wicked discovery by the protagonist to then finally crash it down which makes the ending even more satisfying. The repeated Nazi imagery is extremely clever as it slowly reveals the dictatorship of the cult without revealing too much. I also think to see as the whole film revolves around the main character feeling like everything around him is weird and so the dodgy structural pattern of the film really helps the viewer fit into the protagonists shoes as it feels as if you, as an audience member, is weird for thinking the structural field is strange as it is. Very slow burning film but worth a watch for its stuttering storyline.
