Eggers is cementing himself as one of the most original minds behind western horror cinema. This film follows a similar trail to The Witch in the way it tackles general themes through a nuanced lens. For example, The Witch with religion as it's core theme and The Lighthouse with sexuality and masculinity. The film creates a stylised landscape that surrounds the viewers through its haunting soundtrack and sound mixing to the central performances. Going into this film I thought it had the potential to be purely pretension but it transcended that entirely. There are ambiguous sequences which remind me more of an uncertain A24 feature but that's a small element of an otherwise seemless film.
