The War of the Roses
Boyowza. Firstly, I have a newfound respect for Danny DeVito. Some of the direction in this film was pretty exceptional. There are some jokes in here that have aged terribly and I completely understand why lots of people think this film crossed too many lines. To me, it is such a ridiculously dark comedy that it almost goes from being funny to being too much to back to being funny again. I think it's a real acquired taste but the performances were great and the score guided the viewer through the story perfectly. The slow descent into absurd brutality is pretty entertaining and the increasing collapse of a seemingly happy couple makes this film's pacing feel very natural. I think this is one I'll rewatch and maybe think slightly less of but for now, it's pretty bold and satirical whilst maintaining that cartoony, slapstick humour DeVito seems to be drawn to.
