Kaiba

Wonderfully compact series that asks tough ethical, metaphysical and borderline spiritual questions about memories and what makes a soul. Doesn’t pass on a chance for a bit of comic relief, it’s full of small ironies and hard lessons. The background art is enormous yet simultaneously small. I found myself thinking of set pieces from Dr. Caligari and the art of MC Escher, as well as the art of video games like Katamari Damacy and Pikmin. The soundtrack could be described as repetitive or efficient, depending on the person. It hits when it has to and hits well. The opening and ending themes are very good, with beautiful music paring.
