Kare no ootobai, kanojo no shima

“Don’t be jealous, you’re no match for 53 horsepower.”  The introduction to this movie perfectly sets up the tone of rest of the story. It’s a movie about finding yourself through your desires and doing for doing’s sake just to feel alive. Directed and edited by Obayashi, his cuts exude this wildness and dynamism. The visual style of this movie is stupendous, I was fully mesmerized shot after shot. This is all before talking about his creative use of b&w and color to convey Ko’s moods during different experiences or memories; it was such a fun mechanic to think about during a watch. Stylistic choices really elevate this for me.
