The Thief and the Cobbler
Recobbled Cut Mk5
Thankful and in awe that so many people are still so passionate about the project and are trying to complete the original vision more than 30 years later. Seeing this Recobbled Cut, with all it's interspersed rough frames, outlines and storyboards, felt like watching dailies during production. Very unique watching experience.
This was seriously one of the greatest animation flexes I've ever seen. It's all beautiful hand-drawn art and sequences; a kaleidoscope of colors and textures, extravagant patterns, and forced perspectives. The One-Eye war machine final sequence was totally breathtaking and insanely complex. No wonder this project originally went so far over budget, this might be traditional animation's magnum opus.
Another scene-chewing Vincent Price performance, easily the best VA talent in the cast. But my favorite character is probably the cloud of flies that persistently followed The Thief everywhere he went, such a good gag. The Thief himself was maybe the best drawn/animated character out of everyone. He slinked, crawled, wriggled, crept, slipped and slid with the absolute best of them.
