Reflecting on this film, I am thinking about how a band like The Shins plays happy sounding songs but layers them with often desperately sad lyrics. On its surface, this movie plays like a rom-com, the biggest question being who these people will end up with. But there is a deep cynicism about relationships here: mom remembers no good thing about dad, young people moving from one person to the next while perpetuating cycles of dishonesty. And yet, a dream man tells us we should only see the good in people. People suck and people captivate.
