Payback keeps things simple, and that's one of its biggest strengths. Mel Gibson is perfectly cast as Porter, a ruthless antihero whose only goal is collecting the money he's owed. Gibson plays him with dry humor, quiet confidence, and just enough charm to make an otherwise brutal character surprisingly easy to root for.

Brian Helgeland creates a stylish, rain-soaked criminal underworld that feels like a modern film noir. The story stays refreshingly straightforward, relying on sharp dialogue, dark humor, and a steady stream of confrontations instead of unnecessary plot twists. Gregg Henry is also terrific as Val Resnick, giving Porter a worthy target for his revenge.

The movie occasionally asks you to overlook how conveniently Porter uncovers information and works his way through the criminal organization, but the brisk pacing rarely gives you time to dwell on it. The lean storytelling, memorable lead performance, and gritty atmosphere make it an entertaining one.
