Thor
Thor had the difficult task of introducing a superhero rooted in Norse mythology without feeling disconnected from the rest of the MCU, and it succeeds remarkably well. Kenneth Branagh deserves a great deal of credit for embracing the story's Shakespearean influences, grounding the cosmic spectacle in a compelling family drama about pride, responsibility, jealousy, and redemption. Rather than relying solely on action, the screenplay gives Thor a meaningful character arc as he learns that true leadership requires humility rather than strength alone.
Chris Hemsworth immediately establishes himself as the definitive Thor, perfectly balancing arrogance, charm, humor, and genuine heart. Tom Hiddleston nearly steals the film as Loki, giving the character enough vulnerability and emotional complexity to become one of the MCU's greatest recurring villains. Anthony Hopkins also brings gravitas to Odin, making the fractured family dynamic feel believable.
Visually, Asgard remains one of Marvel's most impressive creations, and Branagh stages several memorable action sequences without losing sight of the characters. My biggest criticism is that the Earth-based romance with Jane Foster occasionally slows the pacing and isn't as compelling as the story unfolding in Asgard. Even so, Thor remains an entertaining and surprisingly thoughtful origin story that established the character on a strong foundation.
