Violent Night

David Harbour is wildly entertaining. His grizzled, exhausted, hard-drinking Santa Claus could have been a one-note joke, but Harbour gives the character surprising warmth, humor, and heart. He fully commits to the absurd premise and somehow makes this version of Santa both hilarious and oddly sympathetic.

The film knows exactly what it wants to be: Die Hard with Santa Claus. Director Tommy Wirkola embraces the concept without irony, delivering creative holiday-themed action sequences, brutal fights, and plenty of dark humor. Leah Brady also provides a strong emotional anchor as Trudy, whose relationship with Santa helps give the story genuine Christmas spirit beneath the violence.

The unusual blend of sentimentality, graphic violence, and comedy creates a challenge. If that combination doesn't click, much of the movie falls apart. Even so, the action is entertaining, the jokes land most of the time, and Harbour's performance makes Violent Night a surprisingly fun holiday action film.
