Absolutely magic combination of precise mise-en-scène and sharp editing -- I mean, just look at the compositions Varda creates during the café scene between the husband and his lover, omg, or the dancing scenes, and also the vividness of the last 25 minutes or so -- to deliver one of the most poignant, subtly provocative films on the horrors of patriarchy and its seemingly endless perpetuation. This damn smirking dude doesn't really love his wife or lover, of course not. He just needs them (both or just one) in his life so he can keep doing whatever he's doing on a daily basis (working as a carpenter, pretending he's taking care of kids, even having spare time to search for another lover), because, you know, life is good and colorful and cheery, at least for those who run patriarchy and might actually sound a bit clueless about it. The terrifying journey of women having to be born, endure and die in a men's world. Seeing it through men's POV just makes it all even more harrowing.
