The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover

filthy and disgusting, beautiful and serene. the cook, the thief, his wife & her lover meshes these two elements together like ying and yang, and to someone who hasn't seen it it may sound foolish or weird but those who have know the sheer greatness it packs into those tight, tense 120 minutes.
michael gambon portrays the scum of humanity, a schoolyard bully who never got a reality check, and he is utterly terrifying to watch, sheer anger and pettiness put on display.
and i obviously can't talk about this film without talking about the beautiful cinematography, lighting & mise-en-scene, as with the help of the booming score carefully crafts this depraved and savage world lit gorgeously by neon lights. the whole thing is almost like a stage play, and in that way i guess it is kind of anti-cinema.
i love this, i love movies that break the conventional mould with images and ideas that are entirely fresh and original, and when they succeed in not completely reinventing the wheel but simply readjusting it, it is so great to see. i will always remember the cook, the thief, his wife & her lover by the sets and performances and will live on forever in my mind as a true creatives vision and pure lightning captured in a bottle.
